Revitalising the George of Poděbrady Square

The square is a compact, functional unit: a dignified front room for the church as well as the venue for various events. The place feels natural thanks to the two plane tree lanes which provide shade. The playground has been extended. Traffic on the northern side has been reduced and a shared zone has been established. New pedestrian crossings have connected the Vinohradská–Slavíkova junction and a new wheelchair-accessible entrance to the underground has been added. Modern adaptation elements have been introduced: 160 new trees and 73 others (replacing the original trees at the end of their life) have been planted in absorbing aggregate substrate with biochar, surfaces are as permeable as possible, rainwaters from the roof of the church are captured and the lawns have improved resistance to climate changes as well as use loads. The author of the architectural concept of the redevelopment is MCA atelier headed by architects Miroslav Cikán and Pavla Melkova.
