George of Poděbrady Square

Prague 3’s largest square was established  in 1896 and named after King George. The name of Jiřího z Poděbrad has been in use since 1948. The eastern part is dominated by the Church of the Sacred Heart. Another notable element is the United Europe Fountain by sculptor Petr Šedivý. The square is lined by buildings dating to the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The northern part boasts a school building from 1913 to the design by Antonin Turek, Královské Vinohrady’s leading architect. In the southern part, the yard of building no. 76/68 hosts an Art Nouveau meeting house of the Czech Baptist Union designed by architect Bohumír Kozák. The square provides a venue for markets and public events.
