Church

Points of Interest

  • Around 1900, Vinohrady had 50,000 residents, most of them Catholics, and services at the Vinohrady parishes of St. Ludmila and St. Alois were packed to capacity. For this reason, the city council donated land for the construction of a new church as early as 1908.

  • Jože Plečnik, a prominent architect on the Prague City Council and a native of Slovenia, initially declined to work on the church. His students won the design competition and eventually persuaded Plečnik to become engaged in the project. He created the designs free of charge as a gift to the church; its shape was inspired by Noah’s Ark.

  • The Karlín-based construction firm Nekvasil took on the project. Only about one-third of the original budget could eventually be allocated to the undertaking, which spelled the end of a grand vision that had called for the square to also house another school or a triumphal arch.

  • During World War II, six bells were melted down to make weapons; only one, the smallest, remained in the church. The air raid on Prague in February 1945 claimed dozens of lives in Vinohrady, but the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus survived unscathed and its basement served the public as an air-raid shelter.
